Summary

Following his book "The Promised Land," about his life and work as President of the United States, Barack Obama was interviewed. One of the questions was: "How did you uphold the highest ideals of our country without, like many, becoming cynical while watching the news?"
Barack Obama replied that this was partly due to maintaining a focus on the future - the long term, not the short term. At the same time, he said, it's important to feel the urgency of the present alongside the long-term perspective.
Feelings of sadness or anger are perfectly acceptable. They seem to be the impetus for Obama to take action or to keep taking action. Obama was inspired to do this by Martin Luther King Jr., who also linked his "I have a dream" to a "sense of urgency."

Dreams come in all shapes and sizes. The most beautiful dreams are those that envision the world, a better place, a place where life is good; for you and for others. Dreaming of ideals that sometimes seem utopian. Too good to be true? Or just so good that you can take action to make them a reality, to the best of your ability.
